Just Dead Saturday

2005-03-26

According to the Church, Jesus died on a Friday. A good one. It was probably nice and warm, and the children were out playing baseball. Crucifixions were probably done on Fridays to give hard working men and women something to look forward to at the end of the week. I can imagine that maybe the Radio Shacks closed early on Fridays.

The legend goes on to say that Jesus rose from the dead on the third day. Apparantly there was some other day back then that was somewhere between Friday and Sunday, as nowadays Sunday is only two days after Friday. It may or may not have been called Pizza Day. Anyway, this day of the rising son is now called Easter, and it is celebrated on Sunday. The Sunday after the Good Friday.

But what of that special Saturday? Jesus neither died, nor rose on this day. On this day, he was just dead. Very little attention is given to this day. No one questions why there had to be a whole day for Jesus to just be dead. Does it take a day to rev up before rising from the dead? Perhaps. Maybe he had pressing business elsewhere beyond the earthly realm. We call it Holy Saturday, but little holiness seemed to be going on that day. In fact, if Jesus was the Holy One, then no holiness was going on that day. It was a break day between the two biggest events in the history of man, according to the church.

I like to celebrate this day, this Just Dead Saturday. I think it is a major event that is overlooked. If Jesus was in fact divine, then resurrection isn't that big a deal. You would expect that if anyone could do it, the son of God could. But he had to wait around a whole day first. I bet he was ancy. So, I celebrate by acting nervous all day, and puttering around the house. I act as if the next day something really, really exciting was going to happen, and I just can't wait for it to come. I invite the church to adopt my tradition, and they can use the name and everything. Holy Saturday doesn't quite describe the day, but Just Dead Saturday has bite. It is something people would remember. Happy Just Dead Saturday y'all! I know it is hard to be patient, but try, because something really cool is going to happen tomorrow.
